2. How often do you recommend having a piano lesson?
You should have a piano lesson on a weekly basis to start with.
If you are a busy adult/ parent/ work shifts etc.... lessons can be tailored around your needs.
3. How long is each lesson?
For a beginner, it's normally a 30 minute session (for a period of 12 months) - however, you can book longer if you wish.
Young beginner (aged 5-6), can arrange a 20 minute lesson for a cheaper rate.
When pupils/ students are approaching Grade 1 standard, their lesson time should be increased to 45 minutes per session.
4. Can you teach the piano in MY home?
Just give me a call, and I can arrange to come to your house.
You will need your own piano, and it will need to be checked over first to see if it is suitable to teach on.
Depending on the distance and work load, it may not be possible to travel a lengthy distance just for one pupil. Please ask for details.
5. How long will it take me to learn some tunes?
Depending on your progress, and how well you practise - I'll have you playing well-known tunes within a matter of MINUTES!
6. Do you do requests?
Of course! .... I am fully trained to play just about anything - classical/ pop/ easy listening etc.... - if you hum it, I'll play it!!
7. Are you registered with an Examining Board?
Now we are getting technical! .... YES, I am registered with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).
I cover all aspects of graded piano & theory exams from Prep Level right up to Grade 8 and beyond. Just ask for details.
8. Do I need a piano to learn on?
This might sound obvious.... but YES!, you need a piano to learn on.
If you don't have a piano just yet, don't worry - perhaps you could arrange to practise on a friend's piano? Then eventually have your own.
You may start with a digital piano to see if you like it.... they start around £300 new. (E.g. Casio CP model with stand & stool)

9. When I start piano lessons, how long should I practise for?
This all depends on whether you are a child or adult, and how much time you have. For beginner pupils (children), it is recommended
to practise the piano "uninterrupted" for at least 20-30 minutes each day. Adults may vary slightly depending on their work and busy life-style.
As a general ball park figure.... 30 minutes' practise per day is the recommended time.
10. If I telephone you to arrange some lessons, do I need any music books.... and do I need to provide you with any information?
Please feel free to ring me any time. You do not need to buy any music books at this stage - just come along. The first induction is
absolutely FREE (no obligation), and incorporates a 'meet & greet' session, simply so that we can introduce ourselves to each other.
I am also willing to play the piano for you - and you are more than welcome to try out my piano. You don't need to provide info at this stage.
During your meet & greet, I can show you the tutorial book required - each pupil must have their own new book.
If you would like to purchase the tutorial book, it costs £11.50
To book your first piano lesson, please telephone 01274 968993 or 0791 485 4072 and speak to Colin - thanks.
I regret that one-off/ first time piano lessons cannot be booked by email or text
11. I don't have a piano yet...... what kind of piano should I buy as a beginner?
There are two kinds of piano that are recommended:-
1. Upright acoustic piano - a normal 'wooden' piano, one with strings and hammers inside & pedals (that needs to be tuned).
2. Digital piano - looks like a short upright/ plugs into a socket/ doesn't require tuning. Learn more....
If you decide to buy an upright piano (1), it is recommended to buy the following:-
Reputable makers name/ Full iron frame/ Over-strung stringing design/ Under-damped mechanism. (Please ask for more details).
If you decide to buy a digital piano (2), it is recommended to buy the following:-
FULL-SIZED keyboard - 88 notes/ Touch weighted keys - that can play loud & soft/ Sustain pedal.
You can buy digital pianos with a built-in cabinet & pedals, or a separate digital piano that sits on a music stand.
If you are not sure, please ask me. For a small charge, I can visit the 'seller' with you and check it over.
12. Is there anything else to consider before I start piano lessons?
As you start to make progress, I will gradually show you some tuition-related items/ products to consider.
If you are about to purchase a piano - then you will also need a piano stool (not a dining chair!)
If you have a young child, it is important that they sit correctly, and at the correct height - about 52cm above floor level.
You will also need a lined note book (spiral pad is fine), and eventually, a metronome.
A metronome is vital if you or your child wishes to eventually enter in for a piano exam. Some digital pianos have them built-in.
SECOND-HAND TUTORIAL BOOKS
For adult tuition, if you have an old 2nd hand tutorial book, often previously written and scribbled in.... you may use this book for lessons - if the content is suitable and in-keeping with what I teach 'structure' wise. It is recommended though to buy a new tutorial book.
All children starting piano lessons (with me), must have their own NEW tutorial book. 2nd hand tutorial books cannot be accepted, even if various pencil markings are rubbed out. Please ask for more details about this subject if needed.
13. Do you include any discounts or offers?
During your initial contact with me (phone or email), I may be able to offer you an "immediate start discount" depending on when you start lessons. Any agreed discounts are for a limited period only, and may change or expire. My prices are very reasonable in any case, even at the RRP.
Discount is offered for multiple tuition (e.g. brother & sister), when booked in advance.
If an existing customer recommends my services to a friend, and as a direct result they start lessons with me, the nominee will receive £10 discount after one month of their new tuition starting.
If you have any further questions - please contact me at any time to discuss your needs.
I am also a registered member of The Guild of Master Craftsmen.
