Grade 2/ Exercise 10iv explained...

iv. Which bar only contains notes belonging to the tonic triad ?
ANSWER: Bar 1
Remember that the key is D minor, as shown in question i - so the triad is always related to its key.
Tonic triads occur frequently in melodies too, and their notes do not need to be in strict order, i.e. "number" sequence 1 - 3 - 5.....
nor do the notes need to be placed on top of each other making a tonic triad chord.
Where you see a question that says "belonging to the tonic triad" - you need to pick out the notes from the tonic triad, and find them
so that the notes are based around the pattern of a tonic triad D - F - A..... they may also appear backwards! .... A - F - D.
In bar 1 above, the tonic triad has been mixed up, so its 3rd - 5th - 1st.... but essentially, it still makes up a tonic triad.
The question also says "only" .... so we are only looking for notes D F A.
For example, in bar 2, the note 'A' appears as a quaver. This is the 5th note of the tonic triad.... but the other notes do not "belong"
to the tonic triad.
