Grade 2 Test / Question 7 explained
Question 7 [Wording below "" as set out by a real exam paper]
"Draw the descending scale of D harmonic minor without key signature, using crotchets".
A pupil here has tried to draw this scale, but there are some mistakes.
How many marks out of 10 would you give it?
ANSWER: C. 4/10
There were SIX mistakes in this exercise, and this part would not have passed in an exam or mock test.
Mistake 1 Scale drawn in the wrong direction; should be DESCENDING (going down).
Mistake 2 3rd note in the scale should be F (no # sign). F sharp implies the scale of D major.
Mistake 3 4th note 'G' - stem in the wrong direction
Mistake 4 5th note is incorrect - should be 'A' (top line) to follow by step after G
Mistake 5 7th note C#...... accidental on the wrong side of the note.
Mistake 6 8th note middle D ...... stem too short. All stems should reach "one octave" in length (for notes less than 2 ledger lines).
Here is a model answer >>>
The candidate may choose to draw this scale one octave higher,
starting on middle D.
